My latest e-commerce project, DigitalMobileShop.com, is now up-and-running. It started as just a test of different shopping cart platforms and backend programming, but I slowly got addicted to getting it up and running. I’ve been busy gathering equipment vendors and suppliers to add to the site and I have a pretty good base going. I think my prices are pretty competitive as well. It is of course a work in progress, while I still try and manage to get all my other work done, but it helps me work through different shopping cart platforms, scripting languages and other business issues that I can then pass on to my other clients. This whole site, from domain purchase to shopping cart installation to test transaction only took about 4 to 5 hours, including loading the products in the database. That gives you an idea of how quickly you can get a site up and running… that is if you have me as your web designer
So if you need any digital computer, wireless or cellular equipment and accessories, swing on over to DigitalMobileShop.com. I also created a special coupon for Jpatrickm.com visitors that will save you 15% off anything in the store. Just use the code: jpatrickm during checkout. Feel free to pass that coupon on to any friends and family as well.
And if there’s something you are looking for that isn’t in the store, just shoot me an email. I can probably find it and you can do some price comparisons. Also let me know if you run into any errors with the site. If you let me know about any problems, I’ll do what I can to make sure you’re taken care of
I’ve been providing hosting to several of my clients and friends for a few years now but I never really got around to formalizing the hosting side of my business. That is until now… I’ve FINALLY got around to putting up a basic website and I’m happy to announce the launch of the new and improved PEZland.net!
You may see similarities between Pezland.net and Jpatrickm. I opted to use WordPress for the new site because even though it’s intended for use as a blogging software, it really is an awesome content management system. What would normally take hours and hours to create and design, WordPress allows you to do in a very short time. With a basic stylesheet and site structure already created, it literally only took me about 2 +/- hours to get the entire site up and running. I decided to use the Firefox template again because I like the colors and layout and the Firefox theme works well with the whole hosting thing.
What is Pezland you ask? Well it’s the domain name that I purchased to officially organize my hosting and keep it separate from my other business domains. I previously used my shadowcasting.com site for the hosting but I wanted something that would be stand-alone as just hosting. So Pezland.net was born.
Why PEZ you ask? Well it’s actually a funny little story. A while back, a girl told me that I was like a PEZ - strangely addicting. (If you don’t know what PEZ is then you were probably born after 1980 and/or don’t like candy. You can educate yourself over at Wikipedia). Anyway, after that, the name sort-of stuck and it has become somewhat of a nickname for me. I thought it would be a clever name for a new domain.
So if you need hosting for your personal site, blog or business then jump on over to Pezland.net! (candy and candy dispenser sold seperately)
As a veteran myself, I just want to wish all those who have served in our military a happy Veteran’s Day. With so much going on in the world, it’s important to say thanks to those who are still fighting the fight. It’s also important to recognize the contributions of ALL veterans, not just the straight ones. There are over 65,000 gay and lesbians currently serving in the armed forces but they are not allowed to serve openly. The Service Members Legal Defense Network (SLDN.org) states,
According to the Pentagon, it has discharged more than 10,000 service members for being gay, including nearly 800 with skills deemed “mission critical” by the Department of Defense. Those who have been discharged include linguists, combat engineers, pilots, medical professionals and others. According to statistician Gary Gates, the armed forces could attract as many as 41,000 new recruits by repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” in addition to the 65,000 lesbian and gay Americans already on duty in the active duty, reserve and national guard forces.
This session of congress has finally introduced legislation to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, with 100 members of congress co-sponsoring the bill. The bill is called the Military Readiness Enhancement Act (H.R. 1059). If you want to learn more about the legislation you can check out the SLDN website.
Some may say, “hey this is Veteran’s Day, don’t hijack this holiday to push your own gay agenda, it’s about the veterans not about being gay”. Well it is about the veteran’s but it’s about all of us who served. Have you served? Did you get off your ass and stand up and do your time? If you didn’t, then don’t talk to me about hijacking Veteran’s day. I earned it. I served for 4 years and lived a misserable lie just because I felt being an officer was more important than being gay. With the ban on gays in the military, Veteran’s day is merely a holiday for “everyone else”. Gay veterans have served, fought and died to protect a way of life they could not themselves enjoy and until we are all equal under the law with the same opportunities to pursue our own careers along side everyone else, then there is no such thing as a nice quiet Veteran’s day.
You can take action and tell your representative in congress that you support the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Visit the Human Rights Campaign website for information on sending an email. You may not have served in the military yourself, but you can at least get off your ass this time around and send a simple email. As they say, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
And if you think the ban on gays and lesbians is justified and should continue, then head on down to your local recruiters office and sign up. There’s plenty of room in line for those allowed to serve.
We are a nation of smart, talented and skilled people. Imagine what we could accomplish if we were also equal.
Well as I expected, there is no internet access where I’m at, so posting pictures is a bit difficult. I’m actually using my cell phone to create this post. Here are a few photos from the last couple of days. They aren’t very good depictions of this place but if you’ve ever been where I’m at, then you’ll probably guess right away. I’ll post more later if I can
Well I finally got around to putting my old photo header back at the top of the page instead of that Firefox banner. I mean, I like Firefox and all, but it was getting old.
This past weekend we had a HUGE halloween party here at the house. At one point you couldn’t even move from one room to the other. There were a lot of great costumes and I’m pretty sure fun was had by all. I had a great night socializing and chatting and roaming around meeting people. The only bad news of the night was that one of my cameras and a credit card were stolen from my bedroom. I’m pretty sure I know who the sketchy little devil is who stole it but I don’t really have a way of contacting him. I was pretty pissed the beginning of the week but I’ve calmed down a bit. The real tragedy to the whole thing is that I had about a weeks worth of self-portrait pictures that were destined for my other site, 50Prime365.com, still on the memory card. So that essentially stopped 50Prime365 at 50Prime279. 279 stressful days of trying to invent a portrait for the day, just down the tubes. Well, the way my life is going these days, it all just fits right in. Another failed project. Anyway, I’m still trying to decide what to do with the carcass of that site so if anyone has any suggestions, feel free to pass them over to me.
On to other news. I’m leaving town tomorrow morning and I’m not going to post where I’m going. I’ll be gone for 6 days until November 8th. I’m not going to say where I’m going because that would ruin the fun. During my travels, depending on Internet availability *hint hint*, I’m going to post various pictures of my location and you, the viewer, have to guess where I’m at. If you’re reading this blog and you somehow already know where I’m heading, then keep your mouth shut. You’ll spoil the fun… well not really, there’s probably not even anyone reading this anyway.
If you are reading… then stay tuned
